Sleep on it: Dame Essentials’ anti-ageing silk pillowcases

Dame Essentials is India’s first Anti-Ageing 100 percent pure Mulberry silk pillowcase

Exclusive Interview With Lifestyle Asia India

Silk pillowcases aren’t new to beauty. These investments are known for their varied skin and hair benefits – a facial that keeps the glow going, a blow-dry that can last longer. Frizz, tangles, wrinkles, acne – many claim these pillowcases are an overnight solution. Versions include soft, mulberry silk cases; silver ion technology infused ones to kill acne-causing bacteria; and those with fold-over layers so one has something fresh for every night. Not surprising then that everyone from Kim Kardashian to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has used them to enhance skin health.

The good news is that you no longer need to cart these high-tech beauties from abroad. Dame Essentials, a new-age Indian label, is providing beauty aficionados with their nightly silk fix. With their pastel-hued pillowcases, sleep masks and even silk scrunchies, the brand offers a variety of options (even customised and monogrammed ones). Armaan Mann, founder, Dame Essentials, spoke to Lifestyle Asia about silk for long-lasting beauty.

What makes Dame Essentials special?

Dame Silk pillowcases are like that friend who always has your back. Silk helps your hair remain smooth, frizz-free and extends your blowouts. It controls oil production, avoids sleep lines and reduces skin irritations because it is anti-bacterial.

For bedding, silk with a 19-momme weight is generally considered to provide the best balance of strength, aesthetics and affordability. But at Dame Essentials, we wanted to go a step further, so we use 22 momme grade 6A long thread 100 percent pure mulberry silk with a charmeuse weave for all our silk goodies. It is like 22 carat for silk.

Is there a need for a product of this kind in India?

India is a young developing nation with the average age of 27 years. A lot of people my age are always stuck in traffic jams. We travel a lot, use our phones too much and lack of sleep gives us that perpetually tired look. We all have stressful lives, and longing for beautiful skin and hair shouldn’t be added pressure. The climatic conditions in India also wreak havoc on your skin and hair, and when we sleep on cotton, it gets aggravated. That’s where Dame Essentials comes in.

How does silk work towards anti-ageing?

We’re dressed in cotton from the time we are born because it’s comfortable, and because it absorbs moisture and sweat. It does the same when we sleep on it, which means we wake up with frizzy hair and sleep lines. These sleep creases ultimately leads to unhealthy, dead-looking hair, premature wrinkles and facial sagging. All the serums that we put on our face also get absorbed by our cotton pillowcase.

Being non-absorbent, silk helps retain the natural moisture levels of our skin and hair. It also enhances the efficiency of night crèmes and serums by letting your skin absorb them better. Since silk it is a completely natural fabric, it is hypoallergenic and contains amino acids which enhance collagen production. If you have sensitive or acne prone skin, silk will actually help reduce the sensitivity and give you healthy looking skin.

What’s the most common misconception about silk in beauty?

That silk makes you feel hotter as compared to cotton. What we don’t understand is that the silk we wear and pure mulberry silk that is used for skincare are completely different. Pure mulberry silk is a natural thermostat that keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
